The Cassowary Coast Regional Council Annual Report 2023-2024 was formally endorsed at the October Local Government Meeting, presenting a year of progress in delivering services that matter most to our community, while focusing on environmental stewardship, economic growth, and community wellbeing.

Mayor Teresa Millwood expressed pride in the Annual Report, which provides an in-depth look at Council’s achievements and commitments over the past year.

“I am pleased and proud to present the 2023-2024 Cassowary Coast Regional Council Annual Report,” said Mayor Millwood.

“As Mayor, it is my honour to share the vision, values, and accomplishments that have defined our year and to highlight our dedication to the essential services that sustain our vibrant community.”

Mayor Millwood acknowledged the significance of community involvement in shaping Council’s priorities, with the 2024 community scorecard collecting over 100,000 words of feedback that will guide future planning.

"Your voices have made it clear that priorities like roads, footpaths, cycleways, health services, youth programs, and safety remain top of mind," she said.

Throughout the year, Council’s partnerships at Regional, State, and Federal levels have advanced several key projects, including:

  • Mission Beach Town Centre Revitalisation Project
  • Port Hinchinbrook Sewerage Treatment Plant and Revitalisation
  • Banyan Park Beautification
  • Hyatt Street Reservoir
  • Primary Healthcare Initiatives

Mayor Millwood emphasised the ongoing focus on roads and waste management, announcing the roll-out of kerbside recycling and advancements in the unsealed roads program.

"We are also deeply committed to environmental stewardship through initiatives like the Reef 2050 Plan, the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy, and our participation in the Reef Guardian Councils program."

Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Graffen reflected on the 2023-2024 year, underscoring the collective achievements and resilience of the Cassowary Coast community.

“As we reflect on the 2023-2024 year, I am proud of the strides we’ve made together in sustainability, economic development, and community engagement,” said Mr. Graffen.

“This year, we have strengthened our community’s resilience, particularly in response to and recovery from Severe Tropical Cyclone Jasper and the associated flooding. Council acted swiftly, implementing kerbside collection and establishing Community and Economic Recovery Hubs, which supported residents and businesses in restoring a sense of normalcy.”

“Our support for local businesses has continued through the Small Business Friendly Council initiative and the work of the Economic Development Advisory Committee. In addition, our Cassowary Coast Events Strategy 2024-2028 promotes sustainable events that highlight the unique characteristics of our region. The community’s input has been integral to projects such as the revitalisation of the Innisfail CBD, Mission Beach Town Centre, and Tully’s Banyan Park.”

“These efforts underscore our dedication to building a vibrant, sustainable, and resilient Cassowary Coast for all, while honouring and preserving the cultural heritage and natural beauty of our region.”
