Successful Tilapia Tournament
Hundreds of fishing fanatics gathered for the 2023 Tilapia Tournament held at Warrina Lakes.
The three and a-half day event held during the school holidays was successful in removing 940 amount of pesky Tilapia from our local waterways.
Councillor and President of the Innisfail Game Fishing Club Nicholas Pervan said he appreciates the continual support from the community and local businesses for their sponsorship and participation during the event.
“I am always excited to be involved with this event that benefits both the community and the environment.
“The Tilapia Tournament is a great way to get children and young people active within the community during the school holidays and educate them about the Tilapia that invade our waterways.
“Warrina Lakes is a family-friendly place for the community to enjoy the parklands, public BBQs, and the playground said,” Councillor Pervan.
The Tilapia Tournament is proudly presented by Council in partnership with the generous 2023 sponsors including BCF, Game Fishing Club Innisfail, Berkley, Soils First NQ, Coastal Marine & Outdoors, Manitto’s Auto Centre, Harvey Norman, Allan Sultana, Kmart, Innisfail Seafood, SNS Building and Construction, Torre’s Pharmacy and Tackleworld.
Johnstone River Community Gardens has also been a significant contributor to this event, assisting with the removal of the Tilapia and turning it into compost through the process of fish lasagna.
Council thanks all sponsors and community members who took part in 2023 event and looks forward to next year’s Tilapia Tournament.
