HOUSEHOLD FLOOD WASTE COLLECTION UPDATE FOR SILKWOOD, TULLY & MENA CREEK

Please note the following amendments to the schedule of collection for household flood waste:

  • Silkwood will start TODAY (Wed 27 Dec)
  • Tully (King, Trower, Brosnan & Murray streets) will start TOMORROW (Thurs 28 Dec)
  • Mena Creek will start TOMORROW (Thurs 28 Dec)

COUNCIL CAN'T RETURN ONCE WE'VE COLLECTED FROM YOUR AREA

Some insurance procedures suggested that residents shouldn't move household flood waste until assessments had been made which meant those residents unfortunately missed the scheduled kerbside collection. Please consider where insurance can cover the removal of your household flood waste.

Areas completed to date are:

  • Mourilyan
  • Goondi, Innisfail, Webb, Cullinane
  • South Johnstone

And a reminder that we cannot collect hazardous waste items as part of this collection. That includes:

  • Tyres
  • Gas bottles
  • Asbestos
  • Chemicals, batteries, etc

STOTERS & TULLY FEES COVERED UNTIL SUNDAY 31/12

To assist residents who are self managing the removal of household flood waste, Council will cover the fees at Stoters Hill and Tully Waste Transfer Stations until Sunday 31 December.

Council has dispatched all possible resources including available contractors to manage massive amounts of waste deposits from the flood, including kerbside collections from areas most affected.

We thank the community for your cooperation and community spirit as we all do our best to help each other in recovery.

High volumes of household flood waste needing Council kerbside collection and crew logistics have resulted in the following adjustments to the collection schedule:

  • Mourilyan – Completed (2 properties on the Highway pending)
  • Webb – Completed.
  • South Johnstone – Completed.
  • Goondi – Started this afternoon and moving into Saturday 23 December.
  • Innisfail & Cullinane – Saturday 23 December and returning Wednesday 27 December.
  • Mena Creek – Thursday 28 December
  • Silkwood – Friday 29 December
  • Tully (King, Trower, Brosnan & Murray streets) - Friday 29 December PM / Tuesday 2 January AM

Household flood waste fees at Tully and Stoters Hill Waste Transfer Stations will now be covered by Council until Sunday 31 December.

The areas that were selected for household flood waste collection were the hardest hit by flood on advice from the Local Disaster Management Group.  The household flood waste collection  applies to the removal of disaster related debris from residential properties to make it safe, habitable and accessible, preventing displacement of the resident.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council appreciates the resilience and cooperation of the community during this challenging time and extends gratitude to residents for their patience and understanding as the region works towards recovery.

Advice to residents for household flood waste collection

Waste should be separated into the following piles directly in front of the household in an area that will not obstruct drainage or cause safety issues for pedestrians:

  • Pile 1 – Damaged furniture and whitegoods
  • Pile 2 - Green waste
  • Pile 3 – Any other material that has been removed from flooded properties preventing safe return such as tiles and bricks (not including ordinary domestic waste or hazardous waste).

All domestic wet waste / dry waste should be deposited in wheelie bins and presented to the kerb for ordinary collection where possible.

All hazardous materials such as batteries, oil and chemicals should be self-managed and safely transported to the closest waste transfer station.
