Flood Recovery: Waste and Kerbside Collection
***Schedule Update 27/12/23**
HOUSEHOLD FLOOD WASTE COLLECTION UPDATE FOR SILKWOOD, TULLY & MENA CREEK
Please note the following amendments to the schedule of collection for household flood waste:
- Silkwood will start TODAY (Wed 27 Dec)
- Tully (King, Trower, Brosnan & Murray streets) will start TOMORROW (Thurs 28 Dec)
- Mena Creek will start TOMORROW (Thurs 28 Dec)
COUNCIL CAN'T RETURN ONCE WE'VE COLLECTED FROM YOUR AREA
Some insurance procedures suggested that residents shouldn't move household flood waste until assessments had been made which meant those residents unfortunately missed the scheduled kerbside collection. Please consider where insurance can cover the removal of your household flood waste.
Areas completed to date are:
- Mourilyan
- Goondi, Innisfail, Webb, Cullinane
- South Johnstone
And a reminder that we cannot collect hazardous waste items as part of this collection. That includes:
- Tyres
- Gas bottles
- Asbestos
- Chemicals, batteries, etc
For further advice about how to dispose of hazardous materials please see this page: https://www.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au/household-hazardous...
STOERS & TULLY FEES COVERED UNTIL SUNDAY 31/12
To assist residents who are self managing the removal of household flood waste, Council will cover the fees at Stoters Hill and Tully Waste Transfer Stations until Sunday 31 December.
Council has dispatched all possible resources including available contractors to manage massive amounts of waste deposits from the flood, including kerbside collections from areas most affected.
We thank the community for your cooperation and community spirit as we all do our best to help each other in recovery.
***Original post**
In support of community members impacted by ex-TC Jasper and flooding, Council will be covering domestic fees and charges for household flood waste at Stoters Hill and Tully Waste Transfer Stations until Sunday 31 December.
For residents who can’t self-manage their own waste removal, collection of hard rubbish for residential household flood waste is being scheduled for areas most affected. This applies to the removal of disaster related debris from residential properties to make it safe, habitable and accessible, preventing displacement of the resident.
Please note the below updated schedule of collections as of 22 December:
HOUSEHOLD FLOOD WASTE COLLECTIONS | TRANSFER STATION FEES COVERED UNTIL 31 DECEMBER
- Mourilyan – Completed (2 properties on the Highway pending)
- Webb – Completed.
- South Johnstone – Completed.
- Goondi – Started this afternoon and moving into Saturday 23 December.
- Innisfail & Cullinane – Saturday 23 December and returning Wednesday 27 December.
- Mena Creek – Thursday 28 December
- Silkwood – Friday 29 December
- Tully (King, Trower, Brosnan & Murray streets) - Friday 29 December PM / Tuesday 2 January AM
Please follow the guidelines where possible. This allows the waste and resource recovery team to manage different waste streams and find alternative uses for each waste stream which will prevent it from going to landfill.
Waste Separation for Kerbside Pick Up
household flood waste piles
For kerbside collection in the flood affected areas, it is advised to separate waste streams as identified in the below:
Green Waste
Branches, logs, palm fronds, vines and leaves
Hard Waste
Damaged furniture and white goods
Building Material Debris
Concrete, bricks, slate, pipes, timber panelling, wall sheeting, timber fences, roofing tiles etc
**Avoid placing waste in an area that will obstruct drainage or cause safety issues for pedestrians**
General household waste should be placed in wet / dry wheelie bins and placed on the kerb for ordinary scheduled collection.
To ensure a smooth and efficient collection process, residents are kindly requested to adhere to the following guidelines:
- Separate items as per the waste stream where possible: Place different items in separate piles to facilitate recycling and disposal.
- Avoid blocking drains: Ensure that items are not placed in a way that obstructions or hinders the flow of water.
- Do not mix hazardous materials: Do not include hazardous materials, such as chemicals or electronic waste, in the kerbside collection.
- Secure loose items: Bundle loose items such as broken branches or small debris, to prevent them from scattering during collection.
Collection Crews and Safety:
Our collection crews are equipped to handle flood-damaged items, and safety measures have been implemented to protect both residents and workers. Please allow crews to perform their duties without interference for everyone’s safety.
