Girramay Shield Unveiled

Cassowary Coast Regional Council and the community gathered at the Cardwell Pump track for the unveiling of the Girramay Shield.

The 2.5-meter-tall Girramay shield features traditional Girramay colours and shapes symbolising the connection to Girramay culture.

Councillor Trudy Tschui Community and Culture portfolio holder said this piece of artwork is one of a kind and will be remembered by all when visiting Cardwell.

“Council partnered with the Girramay People Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC throughout this project to ensure the piece would symbolise a connection to culture at this place.

“The shield also represents the journey for Cardwell as a ride destination which proudly recognises Girramay people and country,” said Councillor Tschui.

During the unveiling of the shield, Council also welcomed new additional features to the pump track; including a new bike rack, grandstand, and a bike maintenance tool rack. These additional features will benefit users of both the Cardwell Tropical Mountain Bike Trails and Pump Track.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council would like to acknowledge all who have contributed to this project, particularly to the creation and building of this grand shield. 

This Girramay Shield and additional features were supported and funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Cassowary Coast Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
