Water Meter Replacement Program - To Commence Soon In Cardwell

Back

Cardwell residents are next in line to receive a Smart Water Meter with installations due to commence Monday 4 December 2023.

This forthcoming stage of Council’s Water Meter Replacement Program is for Cardwell Water Supply scheme which includes Cardwell, Port Hinchinbrook, Ellerbeck, Carruchan and Kennedy. The program is expected to take approximately 12-14 weeks.

The work will be carried out by licensed contractors who may need to access private property in order to replace the meter. Contractors will always attempt to make contact before entering the property.

Council asks that on the day of meter replacement, the Contractor has access to the water meter. This may mean gates are unlocked, dogs are secured and ensure your water meter is visible and accessible, clear of cars, debris or foliage.

For old water meters that are currently below ground, Council will be looking to install the device above ground. Where above ground meters are impractical such as in CBD areas or in driveways, Council may relocate the meter or may install the new meter and transmitter in a meter box.

Once a new smart water meter is installed residents might notice an increase in water consumption when nothing has changed in the household. This is often because the old meter had stopped recording properly. Significant increases in water consumption may indicate a concealed leak requiring an overnight test or the services of a licensed plumber.

Council’s Water Meter Replacement Program has replaced 7,484 water meters with the new smart systems.  Customers with smart meters can access their own meter information through CCRC’s Online Water Portal – water.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au
