Recycling Day Is Here: Cassowary Coast Launches Kerbside Recycling!

Back

Today marks a major milestone for the Cassowary Coast as kerbside recycling officially begins!

With yellow-lidded bins now in place across the region, residents can start recycling their household waste, helping to create a cleaner, greener community.

Councillor Ellen Jessop, portfolio holder for Waste and Resource Recovery, said the launch is a pivotal moment in the Council’s push for sustainable waste management and a big step toward reducing landfill.

“We’re thrilled to see kerbside recycling take off across the Cassowary Coast,” Councillor Jessop said.

“This program gives every household the opportunity to make a real difference, and by recycling right, we can protect our environment and reduce waste for future generations.”

Once your bin lid has been changed to a yellow lid, residents are asked to place it on the kerb every fortnight. Your yellow-lid bin will continue to be collected on its scheduled fortnightly day.

Now that kerbside recycling is live, your recycling day will align with the same fortnight as when your green-lid bin was previously collected.

 How to Get It Right?

Council is urging residents to follow these simple steps to ensure their recycling efforts are effective:

  1. Stick to the Essentials:
Place these key items in your yellow-lid bin:
    • Plastic bottles and containers
    • Steel and aluminium cans
    • Glass bottles and jars
    • Paper and cardboard
  2. Prepare Your Recyclables:
    • Rinse: Remove food and liquid residues.
    • Remove Lids: Bottle caps and jar lids belong in your general waste bin.
    • Flatten Boxes: Save space and make collection more efficient.
  3. Avoid Contamination:
Items like soft plastics, food scraps, and broken glass don’t belong in your yellow-lid bin. These can contaminate the entire load, sending it to landfill instead of being recycled.

Confused about what goes in your yellow-lid bin? Help is at hand!

“Starting with the basics is the best way to succeed,” said Councillor Jessop.

“If you’re unsure about an item, leave it out or check the Recycle Mate app for guidance. It’s better to recycle fewer items correctly than to risk contamination.”

Today is just the beginning. Council will continue to provide residents with tips, updates, and resources to make kerbside recycling as easy and effective as possible.
