“Pubs are meeting places, landmarks and places of story-telling.  They are places of shelter, history, community and celebration.  Some are remarkable for their architecture, some for quirky collections and characters, and some for music, tall tales and laughter.  Whatever appeals to you as a local or a visitor we hope that this book adds to your experience of our stunning part of tropical Australia.” Excerpt, Iconic Pubs of the Cassowary Coast.

Artists and distinguished guests gathered last night at the Innisfail Shire Hall to officially launch a new publication which celebrates the iconic pubs of the Cassowary Coast.

‘Iconic Pubs of the Cassowary Coast’ is a guide to the region’s wonderful establishments from the very oldest licensed hotel established in 1865, throughout the Art Deco era into the 21st century taverns.

The book features illustrations of nineteen pubs by eight local artists whose original pieces were showcased at the launch event.  At the end of the book is a trail map for visitors to plan their ultimate pub crawl while travelling through the region.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor, Mark Nolan congratulated members of the Cardwell Gallery who produced the book which will be available for purchase at local Visitor Information Centres.

“This magnificent book is testament to the talented artists who live in the Cassowary Coast and is a great asset to showcase our iconic pubs to tourists,” said Mayor Nolan.

“I invite everyone visiting the region to appreciate the architecture and unique character of our pubs by picking up a copy of this book and following the trail.”

An initiative of the Hinchinbrook Regional Arts Association, ‘Iconic Pubs of the Cassowary Coast’ was published with support of the Cassowary Coast Regional Council Regional Arts Development Fund.

At the launch event Hinchinbrook Regional Arts Association President, Noel Treharne explained how the book was designed to tempt travellers and locals alike to explore some of what the Cassowary Coast has to offer.

“The range of artistic styles have been captured by individual artists to perfectly compliment one and others’ work, with the research and layout expertly put together by renowned artist and Cardwell Gallery member Daryl Dickson,” said Mr Treharne.

“I am extremely proud of both the effort and quality of work delivered in this book by the Hinchinbrook Regional Arts Association and wish to thank Council for their support in realising this vision.”

‘Iconic Pubs of the Cassowary Coast’ is available for purchase from the Cardwell Gallery and Cassowary Coast Visitor Information Centres.

The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Cassowary Coast Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
