November 3 2020, 'Help Your Neighbour' Cassowary Coast Clean Up Week

Back

Cassowary Coast Regional Council is encouraging all residents to prepare now for storm season.

With Cassowary Coast Clean Up Week running from 7 to 15 November 2020, Mayor Mark Nolan said this year Council is asking everyone to ‘Help Your Neighbour’ in the lead up and during cyclone and storm season.

“Many people, especially the elderly or disabled, rely on the assistance of neighbours before and after storms and cyclones. Now is the time to ‘Meet Your Street’ and understand how you can help each other whilst maintaining good hygiene and social distancing.

“Keep an eye out for an upcoming Council initiative to encourage residents to ‘Meet Your Street’ and interact with your neighbours.

“Meet your street and talk to your neighbours about their plan, help your neighbours collect supplies they’ll need before the cyclone, assist them to evacuate if ordered to do so or check in on them when it is safe for you to head outside,” Councillor Nolan said.

“If you are new to town, I encourage you to talk to your neighbours about how best to prepare for the storm season or access information online.

“Now is the best time to prepare your yard by cutting back trees, scrubs and bushes. This will enable them to better withstand high winds and minimise the risk of flying debris during a cyclonic weather event.

“Residents and property owners can dispose of their domestic green waste and one load of general waste per day for free at any of the Council transfer stations. This is offered not only during Cassowary Coast Clean Up Week but also year round,”

“Council has not been able to offer a kerbside clean up this year. This is due to the large expense involved and the wide geographical area this Council covers. We hope that with the “Help Your Neighbour” campaign and the opportunity for free year-round domestic green waste and general waste disposal that all residents will have had ample opportunity to dispose of their waste,” he said.
