March 5, 2021 - Mayor Encourages Continued Storm Preparedness

Back

While the worst is over for the weather system that impacted the region earlier this week, the threat of cyclone season will continue for a few more months.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Nolan said the importance of continued preparedness cannot be underestimated.

“We have had a taste of the impacts a weather system can have and it showed us that even a low pressure system can have devastating impacts on power supply, phone and internet communications, roads and also farm production and livelihoods,”

“I would also encourage people to keep an eye on the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting during the season to stay ahead of developing situations.”

Cr Nolan said while residents clean up after this week’s event, they should consider what they need to do now to be prepared if it happens again.

“Simple things like preparing an emergency plan, preparing an emergency or evacuation kit, preparing homes and vehicles and checking on friends and neighbours.”

Of the clean-up currently underway, Cr Nolan said Council is working tirelessly to clear roads and public spaces of debris and all transfer stations will continue to accept green waste from residential properties at no charge.
