Long term planning by the Cassowary Coast Regional Council will soon come to fruition with design works commencing on the Owen Street portion of the Edith Street to Grace Street project. The design phase of this project is expected to be completed before the end of 2021, with construction expected to commence in May 2022.

Geotechnical investigation works are scheduled for 17 September (weather permitting) however only minor disruptions to parking and traffic are anticipated.

Cassowary Coast Regional Councillor Barry Barnes who holds the portfolio for Asset Sustainability advised that this area has been listed as a high priority for Council, with design to be in accordance with the Innisfail CBD Master plan.

“The $1.25m reconstruction and design project will allow for a more cohesive look throughout the CBD. Plans will see current street benches and bins to be removed and new street furniture will be installed which will emphasise the Art Deco style in town. Any bollards installed are to be stainless steel to match those already installed on Fitzgerald Esplanade.

“The works scheduled to commence in May 2022, will also remove the existing footpath and upgrade it to the exposed aggregate material already installed on Rankin Street which has been very well received by the community, businesses and customers who use those areas,” said Councillor Barnes.

Councillor Barnes said safety and accessibility for the community has also driven this project, with upgrades allowing from improved convenience for patrons, motorists, and persons with limited mobility.

“I have been advised that in addition to recently installed disability access at shops on Rankin Street, continued consultation will occur for additional advice on disability accesses for both current businesses and as developments progress with the Rising Sun Building.

“If required, stormwater drains will be upgraded and the retaining wall near Coles will have works completed to improve the design.

“These projects are restoring the charm to Innisfail while making sure elements of safety and functionality are considered,” said Councillor Barnes.

This project has been partly funded by the Federal Government 'Roads to Recovery Program'.
