OCTOBER 6, 2021 - STEPS MADE TO COMPLETING THE LINK BETWEEN THE BEACHES

Back

Works for the shared path at South Mission Beach are well underway and will complete the link between the South Mission and Wongaling Beach communities. It will provide a safe and more accessible route to be used by bike riders, walkers and runners.

The first stage of the project is underway now and is approximately 290 metres long and will connect the current path that runs along the Kennedy Esplanade to the western boundary of the caravan park. The path will be made from concrete and include wayfinding signage.

The design of the second stage is still being finalised, however will connect existing works to the track that runs alongside the Waste Transfer Station.

Contractor Allan Sultana Constructions who is completing stage 1 of the project, has been working with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and local businesses to ensure adequate access is maintained.

This project is an exciting addition for both residents of the South Mission Beach area and the many visitors who stay at the caravan park. Once completed, the path will provide a safe route for those wanting to explore by foot or on bicycle.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said investing in regional bike-riding projects was delivering positive benefits for local communities.

"We want to make sure there are safe and convenient transport options for everyone, no matter where they live in Queensland," Mr Bailey said.

“We know that, on average, every dollar we invest in bike-riding infrastructure will return nearly five dollars in economic benefit to Queensland with improved health outcomes, reduced traffic congestion, and lower transport costs.

"That’s why over the next four years the Queensland Government has committed $252 million in funding to support and encourage bike riding across the state, including the South Mission Beach Shared Path project, to improve facilities for locals and tourists alike.

“Investments like this will help get more people riding more often, especially vulnerable users such like school children, around the Cassowary Coast community."

The total project is valued at $800,000 with stage 1 expected to be completed over the next four months, weather permitting and stage 2 to be completed by June 2022.

The South Mission Beach Shared Pathway is proudly supported by the Queensland Government's Cycle Network Local Government Grants program and the Cassowary Coast Regional Council.
