19 DECEMBER, 2022 - TURNING A NEW LEAF WITH TREE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

Back

Cassowary Coast Regional Council is seeking community feedback on the strategic approach proposed within the Draft Tree Management Policy.

The draft Policy provides a framework for how Council will appropriately manage, maintain and protect trees on Council controlled public land, including road reserves and cemeteries.

Councillor Jeff Baines, Environmental Portfolio Holder, said the region’s landscape is characterised by its abundant green assets that are unique to our tropical climate.

“Trees on public land are fundamental to the Cassowary Coast region’s biodiversity and ecological values, landscape character and amenity.

“Trees form the aesthetic backdrop for the region’s outstanding natural environmental values and also shade parks, cool and soften buildings, enhance streetscape amenity, contribute to our community’s health and wellbeing and provide habitat and food for wildlife.

“The natural green landscape has a significant value to Cassowary Coast Regional Council and the community.  However, this also comes at a considerable cost in terms of plantings and maintenance, and can have significant impacts on infrastructure including drainage, construction projects, roads and footpaths,” said Councillor Baines.

Council is requesting community feedback on key aspects in relation to the draft Tree Management Policy. Key areas in which Council is particularly requesting feedback include:

  • Tree Planting;
  • Tree Protection;
  • Tree Asset Management;
  • Plant Species;
  • Tree Pruning or Removal; and
  • Unlawful Tree Removal.
