AVOID  FLOODED AREAS – Cassowary Coast – Monday as at 7:00am Monday,  18 December 2023

Warning level: WATCH AND ACT 

Warning area: Cassowary Coast region – all affected areas

This warning is from the Cassowary Coast Local Disaster Management Group.

Flood water is starting to go down in some places in the Johnstone River catchment area, there is still a Minor Flood warning in place from the Bureau of Meteorology.

The Tully River and Murray Rivers have a current Major Flood warning issued from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Flood water is dangerous.

Avoid all flooded areas.

Ensure your property is safe before commencing cleanup and repairs. If your home has had water through it, do not reconnect power until an electrician has certified your home as safe.

For flood and storm emergency help, call the SES on 132 500. If your life is in danger, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Impacts in your area

  • There has been significant flood damage. Buildings that flooded may not be safe. Check for cracks in the walls or sagging ceilings.
  • Some roads are closed or damaged.
  • Some roads and bridges might look safe but the damage is not easy to see.
  • Some places do not have power. There may also be electrical hazards.
  • Some places do not have clean water. Tap water is not safe to drink. Only drink bottled water.
  • There is a lot of mud and rubbish in the water.
  • There is sewerage and other dangerous items in the water. Do not enter or play in floodwater.
  • The number of mosquitos can grow after a flood. Protect your health and safety: 
    • Use insect repellent.
    • Wear long pants, long sleeves and closed-in shoes.
    • Empty pot plant trays and containers that have water in them.
    • Mobile phones and internet might not work.
       

What you should do

  • If you evacuated, stay where you are until you are told it is safe to go back.
  • If you did not leave, stay in your safe place.
  • If you have children make sure they are with you or an adult you trust.
  • Floodwater is dangerous - never drive, walk, or ride through floodwater.
