Waste Transfer Stations and Libraries to re-open Tuesday 19/12

Back

Cassowary Coast flood recovery is in full swing with Council preparing clean up efforts for areas most affected, and the re-opening of Waste Transfer Stations.

Waste Transfer Stations that can be safely opened to the public on Tuesday 19 December include Stoters Hill, Tully, Bells Creek, and Mission Beach.  Cardwell, Hull Heads and Murray Upper remain closed pending flood and staff accessibility.

For residential household flood waste, plans for a recovery kerbside collection are underway for residents in identified areas who are unable to self-manage waste removal.  Areas of collection will be prioritised by those identified as most affected by flood and must only include material that has been removed from flooded properties that is preventing safe return. Council will advise further detail around this once the collection logistics have been determined.

Standard domestic kerbside bin collection recommenced today however restrictions to access have caused some changes to the schedule, including Cardwell and Tully Heads areas.  All residents whose kerbside bin collection was missed should leave bins on the kerb where it’s safe to do so.  It’s anticipated that Cardwell will be collected Tuesday 19 December and Tully Heads will be collected at some point before Saturday 23 December.

Libraries and Customer Service Centres to re-open Tuesday 19 December

Cassowary Coast Libraries and Council Customer Service Centres will all re-open normal operating hours from Tuesday 19 December.

Clean up advice to residents.

Reduce your risk of injury:

• Don’t try to clean-up too quickly, and get assistance if the job is too big.

• Look out for snakes and spiders, which may have moved to drier ground.

• Be careful when operating chainsaws and other vegetation-clearing equipment – wear protective clothing and keep children and pets away.

• Do not handle wet electrical equipment.

• Even in cloudy conditions, protect yourself from the sun and ensure you drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

Reduce your risk of disease:

• Wear boots and gloves when cleaning up.

• Clean cuts and scratches with clean water or antiseptic and apply a waterproof dressing; if the skin around the cuts becomes red or sore, see your doctor.

• Wash your hands thoroughly before eating.

• Shower thoroughly with soap at the end of each day.

• Clean and disinfect any household surfaces which have come into contact with floodwater.

• Throw out any damaged food.

If you need the SES for assistance please call 132 500, and in a life threatening emergency always call Triple Zero (000).
