Council Approves Policy Amendments Following $7M State Funding for Port Hinchinbrook Sewerage Treatment Project
Cassowary Coast Regional Council has approved amendments to its Debt Policy and Rating Concession Policy, following a special meeting held on Thursday, 5 September 2025.
These changes have been made possible thanks to the recent $7 million funding provided by the State Government for the Port Hinchinbrook Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) project.
This additional funding enables Council to offer a concession of $1,093 for residential Port Hinchinbrook ratepayers, effectively reducing the sewerage charge for the 2024/2025 financial year and into the future.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Teresa Millwood said securing this funding will go a long way in supporting the residents of Port Hinchinbrook.
“This funding demonstrates a strong commitment to improving essential services in our region and I acknowledge the State Government for their contribution.
“We are dedicated to maintaining a balance between financial responsibility and providing necessary services to our community despite the history of Port Hinchinbrook.”
Division 1 Councillor Chris Littlemore expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating this funding is a significant win for our community.
“By securing this support, we can alleviate some of the financial pressure on our ratepayers which was originally due to the shortfall for the construction of the STP. It's a positive step forward for both our residents and the region's infrastructure” said Councillor Littlemore.
Ratepayers who have already paid their rates in full will see a credit applied to their account for the first half of the 2024/2025 financial year, with an additional credit to follow for the second half. For those who prefer a refund instead of a credit, Council has made a "Refund Request Form" available here:

Council encourages ratepayers who have not yet made their payments to contact the Customer Service Team at 1300 763 903 to obtain their updated balance. Rates remain due by Friday, 6 September 2024, and a 5% discount is available for those who pay their full amount by this date.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council wishes to thank Premier Miles for the Queensland Government’s commitment to provide a total of $13.3 million of funding towards the overall normalisation of Port Hinchinbrook.
