Bells Creek and Cardwell Waste Transfer Stations

Cassowary Coast Regional Council is committed to providing efficient waste management services to community members across the region.

To enable the provision of a high standard of services for customers of Cardwell and Bells Creek Transfer Stations, Council will be temporarily staffing these sites and the automated access pins will be withdrawn from Monday 13 February 2023.

Since the automation of waste sites, it has become evident that customers have not consistently been directing their waste to correct disposal and recycling areas. By 2025 we are aiming to reduce 35% of total waste produced to landfill and as a part of our commitment to improve our waste and recycling services and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, Council encourages community members to sort their waste correctly in recycling zones to minimise disposal costs for ratepayers. Council offers recycling of specific items at each location including E-waste which can be disposed of free of charge at the Bells Creek, Stoters Hill and Tully facilities. For a full list of where items can be recycled please visit www.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au/waste-transfer-stations-2.

Council Staff will be on site at Cardwell and Bells Creek Waste Transfer Stations to support the education of waste management and guide correct segregation of waste at the facility.

To provide for recovery of disposal and Waste Levy costs commercial customers will be charged and domestic customers disposing of chargeable items listed in Fees & Charges on Council’s website www.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au/fees-charges, will be charged accordingly.

Customers using Bells Creek and Cardwell Transfer Stations will still be able to collect mulch, when available. Customers can bring their own equipment to safely load mulch or alternatively staff will be able to use equipment to load for transportation.

Cardwell and Bells Creek Waste Transfer Stations will have EFTPOS available to customers or customers can be invoiced to their account with Cassowary Coast Regional Council.

If you do not have an account, you can apply for one by contacting Council and requesting an application for credit account for Waste Disposal Charges.

  • We aim to provide a safe facility for use by all within the community and everyone’s safety is a high priority. That is why we have a set of site entry conditions at all Waste Transfer Stations in the Cassowary Coast region.

Site entry conditions are as follows:

    • Wear suitable enclosed footwear. Bare feet, thongs or sandals are not permitted
    • Compliance with signage and requests of site staff is mandatory at all times

Failure to comply with these conditions could result in refusal of entry.

  • Yes. While presently Council does not have any operators for the tip shop, customers can still drop off or pick up items with a small, negotiated fee to be charged.

  • There are no changes to domestic allowance, fees and charges of waste disposal. Chargeable items are listed in Fees & Charges on Council’s website www.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au/fees-charges.

  • We know its easier to just throw it in the one bin. But doing that comes with environmental and economic costs. To reduce community members are encouraged to look at how they can reduce waste, separate waste streams and recycle as efficiently as possible to help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Help us help you.

    • We suggest that you separate your recyclables from your dry waste before you come to the transfer station. This will make it easier for you to drop it at the designated areas.
    • Sorting your load will make disposal of different materials easier and ensure they go to the correct areas.
    • If a load is not sorted, it can be difficult to see what type of materials are in the load meaning in some cases, you may be charged an incorrect fee at the gate.
    • Sorting your load can save you money. It's as simple as:
      • Grouping reusable items together (furniture, mowers, bikes, etc).
      • Keeping recyclables together.
      • Sorting bricks and rubble together.
      • Separating timber, metals, electronic waste, paint, oils and green waste from general rubbish.

When it comes to achieving a zero-waste society, let’s work together.
