Tully Caravan Park Revitalisation Attracts Record Visitation
An infrastructure upgrade and edible garden has breathed new life into Tully Caravan Park, attracting record visitation and reviews since it reopened in November 2021.
Celebrating its second year of operation since reopening, the Council-owned park almost tripled its occupancy of powered sites from 23% in June 2022 to 61% in July 2023, achieving a 4.3 star rating on Wikicamps.
Division Two Councillor Teresa Millwood attributed the Park’s success to a collaboration of Council with local businesses and new caretakers.
“Council revived this facility after extended closure to draw people into the Tully CBD,” said Cr. Millwood.
“With funding support from Works for Queensland, Council gave the park a complete overhaul of infrastructure to install new sewer lines, water lines, an improved power grid and new showers and amenities.
“We collaborated with local businesses who helped to design a unique point of difference with an edible garden of 479 plants including 30 tropical fruit trees and 18 citrus trees.
“This has been a great boost for Tully by presenting our proud town and unique natural produce to the delight of visitors.”
The essential upgrades and lush new vegetation laid the foundation for the park's resurgence with the appointment of caretakers Steve and Leanne Haronga.
“For us it has been a privilege to create a shared vision with Council,” said Leanne.
“We are very proud caretakers of Tully Caravan Park. It fills us with joy when guests are surprised what they find when they arrive.
“The park offers a special taste of Queensland through our most prominent attraction being the large granadilla fruit growing on the trellis which is the greatest source of curiosity for our visitors.”
The Works for Queensland program supports regional councils to undertake job-creating maintenance and minor infrastructure projects.
