Have Your Say on Cassowary Coast Stinger Nets

Back

The Cassowary Coast, home to beautiful beaches like Etty Bay, Mission Beach, and Kurrimine Beach, attracts visitors year-round. But the presence of marine stingers like box jellyfish that pose a safety risk. To address this, stinger nets have been installed in key locations, providing a safer swimming environment.

However, hiring and operating these nets comes at a significant cost. Each year the cost to hire and operate the nets is over $500,000 including the seasonal lifeguard patrols. As these costs impact local ratepayers, it’s vital for the community to have a voice in the future of this service.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council is encouraging locals, tourists, and stakeholders to share their thoughts on the stinger nets service provision and suggest any feedback on how they can be utilised better. This consultation will run from Monday 14 April till Monday 5 May 2025 5:00pm.

“The safety of our community and visitors is our top priority,” said Mayor Teresa Millwood.

“We understand the importance of stinger nets and the safety they bring to swimmers, but we also need to ensure that resources are being used effectively.

“This consultation provides an opportunity for everyone to have their say and help shape the future of our stinger net services in the region.”

Residents and visitors can take part by visiting the Council’s YourSay website and completing a brief survey. The survey asks for feedback on awareness and usage of the current locations of the nets, their overall value, and any suggestions.

The consultation will close on Monday 5 May 2025 at 5:00pm, so interested individuals are encouraged to participate as soon as possible.
