December 18, 2020 OUTER TOWN BLITZ HELPING TO BEAUTIFY THE CASSOWARY COAST

Back

Cassowary Coast Regional Council Councillor Kylie Farinelli said Council has had a long relationship with the program and has provided many benefits for our outer areas.

“Work commenced in November 2020 and was completed a month ahead of expected completion date. Works were undertaken in South Johnstone, Wangan, Mourilyan, Silkwood, Moresby, Cowley Beach, Kurrimine Beach and El Arish.

“The Work Camp Program allows low risk prisoners from Lotus Glen Correctional Centre Farm to perform community maintenance and beautification projects in regional areas of the Cassowary Coast.

“I have been an advocate for this program in our region as participation in the program allows prisoners to give back to the community, improve their work skills and job readiness and also promotes successful prisoner rehabilitation.

“They are doing good work and saving ratepayers money. The savings on regional maintenance can then be utilised towards other areas.

“To earn the right to participate in the program, prisoners must demonstrate positive behaviour and attitudes. The program was established in Innisfail as a permanent camp in 2006 to assist the community in the clean up after Cyclone Larry.

“Workers completed tasks such as pressure cleaning of footpath and street furniture, cleaning of street signs, litter collection, park beautification and mulching, undertaking street sweeping, kerb and channel cleaning which forms part of Council’s wet weather preparations and helps to ensure we are storm ready.”
