FEBRUARY 1, 2022 - SMART METER READERS TO GO LIVE IN 2022

Back

Across 2021, the Cassowary Coast Regional Council converted almost a thousand existing water meters into smart water meters allowing for real-time water-use data across the region.

Through the CCRC Water Portal, launching later in 2022, residents will have the ability to receive daily water-use data.  This shall enable the customer to exercise more control over water use, receive more information to better understand a water bill and get improved ability to identify and fix leaks fast, reducing water loss as well as associated costs.

A smart water meter device is attached to existing water meters. It collects, transmits and analyses water-usage data and digitally sends the information to secure operational and customer digital portals.

Currently, 50% of the region’s meter fleet has a smart reader, totalling over 6,000 smart meter readers.  The goal is to replace 10% of the meter fleet every year.  However, it is envisioned that greater than 10% smart water meter replacement will occur over the next financial years.

In the first half of 2022, Council will focus on implementing smart meters in Belvedere, Stoters Hill, Pin Gin Hill, Sundown and Goondi Hill which will equate to approximately 500 more smart meters.

Residents in the suburbs identified will receive a letter shortly advising on the upcoming works and what to expect.  The impact on residents and property in these areas will be minimal.

Already, Council has seen the benefits of the smart meters and has been able to detect issues quickly and notify property owners accordingly. The data supplied has also allowed Council to monitor peak demands and improve planning for future upgrades.

The online CCRC Water Portal is currently being trialed at a number of properties across the Cassowary Coast.

Council will continue to provide updates as they occur.
