FEBRUARY 25, 2022 - NO TIME WASTED ON MISSION BEACH TRANSFER STATION UPGRADES

Back

The Mission Beach Waste Transfer Station upgrades have commenced and will focus on improving functionality, safety and overall, through the new layout, supports the diversion of waste from landfill by providing more opportunities for the community to reuse and recycle.

The works include the construction of a new entry and exit access areas, a sealed carpark, new drainage, as well as a new Tip Shop Shed.

Council’s goal is to reach a recycling rate of 60% by 2025 in line with the Queensland State Government’s Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy. Therefore, the new design of the facility has improved recycling zones, ensuring the recycling process is made easy for the whole community.

Works for the Mission Beach Waste Transfer Station Redevelopment will be completed by local contractor, Alan Sultana Constructions, who are based in Innisfail, for the amount of $895,590 (excl. GST).

The transfer station will remain open for the duration of the upgrades and traffic control will be onsite to manage any changes or restriction to the site access. To allow for works to be completed, the Tip Shop will be closed during the upgrades and any users wanting to donate items can do so at Stoters Hill or Tully Waste Transfer Stations.  Alternatively, donations can be made to your local second hand store.

In the initial first weeks of the project, Contractors have already identified incorrectly disposed of landfill which will have to be removed and transferred to alternate landfill sites, delaying the project slightly.

Works are expected to take three months, weather conditions permitting.

Council thank the Mission Beach community for their patience during the upgrades and will continue to provide updates on the project as they occur.
