Paws-itively Free- Dog Off Leash Trial Fetches Tail-Wagging News

Dogs will be allowed off leash in parts of the Cassowary Coast region thanks to a decision made by Councillors at the June Ordinary Council meeting to make the off leash trial locations permanent.

Councillor and Environment Portfolio holder Jeff Baines said that the decision for the six sites, from Innisfail to Cardwell to become permanent, off leash areas is one to celebrate.

“We now join the majority of Councils who offer these specific areas for residents and visitors, and we see the trend in the popularity of these areas only continue to increase.

“I extend Council’s gratitude to the residents, community groups, and visitors to the Cassowary Coast who actively participated in the discussions regarding the trial and shared their valuable input.”

“During the preceding trial period, the feedback received was generally favorable, with a recurring request for enhanced infrastructure. While concerns were raised regarding potential impacts on wildlife and other beachgoers, these concerns mainly pertained to areas outside the designated trial sites.

“Notably, no significant incidents were witnessed or reported throughout the trial duration. This emphasised the crucial role of dog owners in responsibly restraining their pets outside the designated off leash areas and underscored the significance of Council’s enforcement.”
