CONSTRUCTION OF REVITALISED MISSION BEACH TOWN CENTRE TO COMMENCE
Cassowary Coast Regional Council is pleased to announce that construction is scheduled to commence in April 2024 on the Mission Beach Town Centre Revitalisation Project. It is envisaged that this project will transform the Mission Beach town centre through infrastructure roads, drainage, landscaping, and lighting.
The construction contract has been awarded to RMS Engineering and Construction Pty Ltd. Construction is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2025.
The $18.98 million Mission Beach Town Centre Revitalisation Project includes the upgrade of ageing stormwater infrastructure and redevelopment of the Mission Beach Village Green and adjacent Porter Promenade.
Guided by the 2018 Mission Beach Strategic Master Plan, Council endorsed the project design in October 2023 following extensive community consultation.
This project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies program in association with Cassowary Coast Regional Council.
Quote attributable to Cassowary Coast CEO:
“This is a major milestone for Mission Beach as this transformative project aims to revitalise the town centre and create an even more vibrant and welcoming environment for residents and tourists to shop, stay and play.
”The revitalised streetscape will enhance the aesthetic appeal and accessibility of the CBD, ultimately contributing to a more enjoyable experience for everyone.”
"Local businesses will benefit from increased foot traffic, and the town centre will serve as a flexible hub for events, supporting an increase in visitation.”
Quote attributable to Assistant Minister for Local Government Ali King MP:
“The Miles Government is proud to help our hard-working councils build and upgrade the priority infrastructure that Queensland’s growing towns, cities and regions need.
“The transformation of the Mission Beach town centre is just one of the projects we’re supporting to make this community even better, while also delivering good local jobs.
“Since 2015 the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program has supported seven projects across the Cassowary Coast, creating or supporting more than 285 jobs. Over this period LGGSP has provided more than $9.3 million to Cassowary Coast Regional Council.”
Quote attributable to RMS Engineering and Construction:
“RMS looks forward to partnering with the Cassowary Coast Regional Council to deliver this exciting revitalisation project for Mission Beach.
“With a strong presence in the region already, we understand the importance of ensuring there is minimal disruption to businesses and residents providing regular communication with the community and stakeholders.”
Quote attributable to Patrick Bluett, President of Mission Beach Community Association:
“This revitalisation will provide a much-needed boost for local businesses and tourism in Mission Beach, and our community is eager to see the village come alive as a vibrant hub where we can gather and enjoy life on the Cassowary Coast.
“I was pleased to see that the unique character of Mission Beach is being celebrated in the final designs, with a theme of rainforest leading to the reef woven through the street design amongst unique elements such as cassowary footprints and a nature play area for the kids.
“There’s a great sense of optimism about what this might bring to our community.”
What to Expect in the Coming Months
Construction will be undertaken in a staged approach to minimise impacts on local businesses along Porter Promenade and the Village Green. RMS Engineering and Construction will commence upgrading of the stormwater outlet along the Foreshore working their way through the village green area. Parking changes during and after construction along David Street will be communicated to minimise inconvenience to the public.
As the project progresses, and timeframes are confirmed, updates will be provided on the Council’s Project website, Facebook page and through fortnightly community updates. These updates will provide further details on what the community can expect to see at each stage of the works.
The Cassowary Coast Regional Council remains committed to minimising disruptions (where possible), engaging with the traders and operators to keep all informed about the next steps in this transformative journey. A site office will be available on weekdays for the community to drop in and ask any questions or collect up-to-date information.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council will soon be launching a “Shop Mission Beach” campaign to support the local traders and operators through exciting initiatives.
