Cassowary Coast Regional Council (CCRC) is proud to announce the establishment of its inaugural First Nations Peoples’ Advisory Committee.

Mayor Teresa Millwood said the initiative is a cornerstone of the CCRC 2023-2025 Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

“Through this committee we’re furthering our dedication to understanding, respecting, and bridging the equity gap between Australia’s First Peoples and all Australians,” Mayor Millwood said.

“The Committee will operate under the guiding principles of our Innovate RAP, which focuses on building relationships, acknowledging cultural practices, and fostering a diverse, inclusive community connected to culture and country.”

The Committee's primary objectives include:

  • Contributing to the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Cassowary Coast Regional Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan.
  • Providing expert advice on matters related to First Nations Peoples in the Local Government Area.
  • Offering strategic insights on relevant policy and community matters.
  • Council’s Vision for Reconciliation is based on acknowledging and celebrating the histories and cultures of First Nations Peoples. Through this Committee, CCRC aims to:
  • Develop Respect: Build relationships and create opportunities for an inclusive community.
  • Strengthen Connections: Learn and apply Cultural Practices and Protocols to build trust and diversity.
  • Close the Gap: Promote equality and inclusion through meaningful partnerships and mentoring programs.

Council is now inviting applications for membership to the Advisory Committee. Interested individuals from the First Nations community of the Cassowary Coast Local Government Area who are committed to representing the community and supporting the Committee’s goals are encouraged to apply.

Committee members will offer independent, constructive feedback and act as a strategic link between the community and the Council. The role involves attending meetings, representing the views of the First Nations community, and working collaboratively towards outcomes that benefit all members of the community.

Council expresses its gratitude to the Cassowary Coast Regional Council RAP Committee for their leadership in progressing this important initiative.
