Community Notice: Ongoing Drainage Works at Callendar Park

Back

Cassowary Coast Regional Council wishes to inform residents about recent fluctuations in water levels at Warrina Lakes Community Parklands and the northern suburbs of Innisfail.

Last month, Council commenced the critical Callendar Park drainage project. This major stormwater upgrade involves replacing approximately 60 metres of damaged and unserviceable stormwater culverts that drain Warrina Lakes through Callandar Park to the Johnstone River.

By replacing this infrastructure, we will reduce the risks of a significant failure within the stormwater system and the potential for uncontrolled flooding.  Replacing this infrastructure will also extend the stormwater system’s service life and reduce ongoing maintenance expenses.

During the upgrade works the stormwater drain inlet within Warrina Lakes is being managed by contractors utilising controlled releases and pumping to balance community safety and project needs.

The unseasonal recent heavy rainfall has caused water levels in Warrina Lakes Wetlands to fluctuate, resulting in water inundation in some low-lying areas adjacent to the Lakes.

Council is committed to protecting homes from potential impacts due to high rainfall and has measures in place to release water though the construction site if required. Council, along with the contractor, is actively monitoring water levels and forecasts, and will continue to take necessary actions as required.

Works are expected to be complete in November 2024. Council encourages residents with water inundation concerns to contact Council directly on 1300 763 903 or email enquiries@cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
