Tilapia Tournament Kicks Off with Over 600 Competitors Ready to Reel in Results
The highly anticipated Tilapia Tournament officially opened today at Warrina Lakes with over 600 registered competitors set to cast their lines over the next 2.5 days. The family-friendly event, running from Wednesday, 18 December to Friday, 20 December, combines fun, prizes, and environmental action as participants help remove invasive tilapia from local waterways.
In previous tournaments, participants reeled in impressive results, with a single day’s catch totalling over 92 kilograms of tilapia! Event officials expect another fantastic effort this year as competitors fish for prizes while helping to restore the health of the Warrina Lakes ecosystem.
Councillor Nicholas Pervan said the Tilapia Tournament is a fantastic way to engage the community in environmental stewardship.
“Not only are participants helping to manage the invasive tilapia species, but they’re also enjoying quality time outdoors with friends and family.
“It’s a win-win for our region. And let’s not forget the amazing prizes from our generous sponsors—this year’s tournament features over $6,000 in prizes, thanks to their incredible support.”
