Get Ready Cassowary Coast with Pre-Cyclone Cleanups

Back

This month is Get Ready Queensland which means it's time for our community to Get Ready for the upcoming severe weather season.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor and Disaster Committee Chair Mark Nolan said as part of preparing for cyclone and storm season, Council is asking residents to do their part to ‘Get Ready’.

“It’s not only your property you need to prepare, but it’s also important to remember that items left on the beach and foreshore have the potential to become flying missiles during a high wind event,” said Mayor Nolan.

This year, to ensure the region participates in key ‘Get Ready’ initiatives for this Cyclone Season, Council is providing a FREE Pre-Cyclone Season Clean Up from Friday 20 October 2023 to Monday 23 October 2023 and then again on Friday 3 November to Monday 6 November. The Clean Up will enable residents to drop dry domestic waste free of charge at the following Waste Transfer Stations:

Mission Beach

  • Bells Creek;
  • Stoters Hill;
  • Tully; and
  • Cardwell.

The free domestic dry waste disposal will encourage the community to clean up their yards and remove anything that has the potential to become a missile during a cyclone event. Across the region, green waste and other recyclable items can be disposed of anytime for free at the above listed locations. Please note wet waste will remain chargeable and limits will apply on domestic quantities and some items – a full list of charges that still apply is available on Council’s website: www.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au/disaster-information.

Murray Upper and Hull Heads are omitted from the free weekend due to facility layouts, however, free Green Waste still applies at Hull Heads.

Council is also asking residents to remove loose items, such as chairs and tables from our beaches and foreshore areas in preparation for the upcoming storm season. Remember, once the wet weather event starts, it’s too late for action.
