Household Flood Waste Fees Covered and Collections Scheduled

In support of community members impacted by ex-TC Jasper and flooding, Council will be covering domestic fees and charges for household flood waste at Stoters Hill and Tully Waste Transfer Stations until Friday 22 December. 

For residents who can’t self-manage their own waste removal, collection of hard rubbish for residential household flood waste is being scheduled for areas most affected.  This applies to the removal of disaster related debris from residential properties to make it safe, habitable and accessible, preventing displacement of the resident.

Residents of Mourilyan, South Johnstone, Silkwood, Goondi, East Innisfail and Webb who need Council assistance with household flood waste removal are requested to separate their waste into piles on the kerb directly in front of their home. 

The schedule of household flood waste collections will commence with the below schedule:

  • Mourilyan – Wednesday 20 December
  • South Johnstone – Thursday 21 December
  • Silkwood – Friday 22 December
  • Goondi, East Innisfail & Webb – Saturday 23 December

Waste should be separated into the following piles directly in front of the household in an area that will not obstruct drainage or cause safety issues for pedestrians:

  • Pile 1 – Hard waste (such as damaged furniture and whitegoods)
  • Pile 2 – Green waste
  • Pile 3 – Any other material that has been removed from flooded properties preventing safe return such as tiles and bricks (not including ordinary domestic waste or hazardous waste).

All domestic wet waste / dry waste should be deposited in wheelie bins and presented to the kerb for ordinary collection where possible.

All hazardous materials such as batteries, oil and chemicals should be self-managed and safely transported to the closest waste transfer station.

Residents who require assistance with washing out damaged properties are advised to contact Innisfail S.E.S Unit by calling 132 500 or by logging a request at https://132500.qld.gov.au/ses-webapp/. With the assistance of Rural Fire, the S.E.S will commence washing mud from houses in Mourilyan tomorrow – Wednesday 20 December.

Clean up advice to residents.

Reduce your risk of injury:

  • Don’t try to clean-up too quickly, and get assistance if the job is too big.
  • Look out for snakes and spiders, which may have moved to drier ground.
  • Be careful when operating chainsaws and other vegetation-clearing equipment – wear protective clothing and keep children and pets away.
  • Do not handle wet electrical equipment.
  • Even in cloudy conditions, protect yourself from the sun and ensure you drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

Reduce your risk of disease:

  • Wear boots and gloves when cleaning up.
  • Clean cuts and scratches with clean water or antiseptic and apply a waterproof dressing; if the skin around the cuts becomes red or sore, see your doctor.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before eating.
  • Shower thoroughly with soap at the end of each day.
  • Clean and disinfect any household surfaces which have come into contact with floodwater.
  • Throw out any damaged food.
