$19M Port Hinchinbrook Sewerage Treatment Plant Officially Unveiled
On 15 January 2025 Cassowary Coast Regional Council, alongside Australian and Queensland Government representatives Senator Anthony Chisholm, Mr Terry James Member for Mulgrave (as delegate for the Deputy Premier) and Mr Nick Dametto Member for Hinchinbrook celebrated the official opening of the Port Hinchinbrook (Cardwell) Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP). This significant infrastructure project marks a major milestone in the ongoing development and normalisation of Port Hinchinbrook.
Mayor Teresa Millwood expressed her gratitude to the Queensland and Australian Governments for their substantial contribution, acknowledging the collective efforts behind the project.
“This opening is a momentous occasion for the Port Hinchinbrook community. The $13.3m funding from the Queensland Government and $6m from the Australian Government has enabled us to deliver a modern sewerage treatment facility that addresses long-standing infrastructure challenges,” Mayor Millwood said.
“This plant not only safeguards the health and wellbeing of our residents but also supports the continued growth of this iconic destination. We are deeply grateful for the Queensland and Australian Governments’ support of our region’s needs.”
Deputy Mayor and Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor Nick Pervan further emphasised the broader significance of the project.
“The normalisation of Port Hinchinbrook demonstrates the power of collaboration between all three levels of government. Together, we have addressed a long-standing issue that has impacted the Port Hinchinbrook community,” Deputy Mayor Pervan said. “This new STP paves the way for a sustainable future, ensuring the community can thrive while protecting the natural environment.”
The Port Hinchinbrook (Cardwell) Sewerage Treatment Plant marks Council's final stage in the normalisation process, reflecting ongoing efforts to address the estate's privately owned infrastructure. These upgrades include roads, culverts, and pump stations. This achievement reflects years of advocacy, negotiation, planning and an ongoing commitment which has culminated in support of $19.3 million in funding from both the Queensland and Australian Governments for which we are extremely grateful.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council extends our sincere thanks to all stakeholders involved in bringing this vital project to fruition.
