We’re receiving reports of a new email scam attempting to steal financial and personal identifying information.

Scammers pretending to be from Cassowary Coast Regional Council are emailing and requesting people to advise Council of their next scheduled payment date for accounting records and to reply to the email.

Scammers use can use any information you provide to:

• Steal money or commit fraud in your name

• sell your identity to organised crime groups on the dark web or via other means.

Be aware, the sender’s email address can look legitimate at first glance. The image is an example of the format this scam can take.

If someone claiming to be from the Cassowary Coast Regional Council contacts you and ask you what payment date is, says you are owed a refund or asks for your credentials, bank or personal details such as your driver’s licence, it is likely they are a scammer.

Don’t click on links, open attachments or download any files from suspicious emails or SMS; we will never send an unsolicited SMS that contains a hyperlink.

We will also never use social media platforms to discuss your personal information or documentation or ask you to make payments. If you’re unsure if it’s really the Cassowary Coast Regional Council, don’t engage with them. Phone us on 1300 763 903 to check. You can also report any suspicious contact claiming to be from the Cassowary Coast Regional Council to us via enquiries@cassowartcoast.qld.gov.au.
