Flood Watch Issued for Cassowary Coast Region – 10:25am, Sunday 2 February 2025

BoM Severer Weather Warning for parts of North Tropical Coast 7:35 am Sunday, 2 February 2025

Cassowary Coast residents are advised the potential locally intense rainfall and winds may continue into early next week subject to the strength and position of the trough and low.

Key points:

  • HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast between Tully and Ayr, and inland, including the towns of Cardwell.
  • Some areas in the Cassowary Coast Region Cardwell may be isolated and transport routes could be disrupted.

Current Flood Warning – Minor Flood Warning for the Johnstone River Catchment Issued at 5:36 am EST on Sunday 2 February 2025 (IDQ20715)

  • Minor flooding may occur along the South Johnstone River.
  • No river level observations are available for Mourilyan Mill, however, the river level is expected to be below the minor flood level (8.00 m). The South Johnstone River at Mourilyan Mill may reach the minor flood level (8.00 m) overnight Sunday into Monday, with forecast rainfall.

Current Flood Warning – Moderate Flood Warning for the Tully and Murray Rivers

Issued at 7:19 am EST on Sunday 2 February 2025 (IDQ20720)

  • Moderate flooding is occurring along the Tully River.
  • The Tully River at Euramo is currently at 8.75 metres and rising slowly, above the moderate flood level (8.00 m). The Tully River at Euramo may reach around 8.90 metres Sunday afternoon. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.
  • Moderate flooding is likely along the Murray River.
  • There are no observations for the Murray River at Murray Flats, however, based on upstream gauges it is expected that the river level is above the minor flood level (7.00 m) and rising. The Murray River at Murray Flats is likely to reach the moderate flood level (7.50 m) Sunday afternoon. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.

  • Slow down and drive with caution.
  • Never drive through floodwater – turn around, don’t drown!
  • Watch for debris, fallen trees, damaged roads, and landslides.
  • If conditions worsen, find a high, safe place away from trees and drains.
