Food Drop Update - Port Hinchinbrook, Cardwell as of 10:45am
What we are hearing:
• There is difficulty accessing fresh produce across the entire Cassowary Coast region.
• We are aware there is fresh produce available at the IGA in Tully, but residents are still facing challenges in obtaining enough fresh food.
What council is doing today:
• Council has escalated this issue this morning during the state’s emergency briefing. The state government is expected to provide an update this afternoon.
• A Chinook helicopter is bringing food for Cardwell. It is expected to take off from Townsville at 10am, arriving at Port Hinchinbrook.
• Transport trucks from Blenners will assist in moving pallets to the Friendly Grocer in Cardwell.
• Council will assist with unloading and breaking down pallets to ensure food is available for purchase. Please note this is not fresh produce.
• Please allow some time for stock to make it into the store—food should be available for shopping from 2:00pm.
There is misinformation that this is a free food drop, that is incorrect it is just a resupply for the local Cardwell Friendly Grocer.
As the situation evolves, council will continue to assist with food distribution and ensure that residents have access to essential resources. Regular updates will follow as new information becomes available.
