Cassowary Coast Regional Council is sponsoring The Amazons Australia, a world-first all-female World Series adventure race set to bring national and international competitors to the spectacular landscapes of Mission Beach and Dunk Island from 6–10 July 2025.

As part of the Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS), this three-day stage race will see teams

of two challenge themselves to an extreme adventure, combining trekking, navigation, mountain biking, paddling and mystery challenges.  They will test their skills and resilience across rugged yet beautiful terrain showcasing the region’s incredible natural beauty on a global stage.

Mayor Teresa Millwood highlighted the significance of Council being committed to supporting events that align with the Cassowary Coast Events Strategy 2024–2028, with The Amazons Australia being a fantastic opportunity to attract new audiences to our region.

"This event not only highlights the Cassowary Coast as a premier adventure destination but also celebrates and promotes female athletes. I am excited about us having this opportunity for local women to take on the challenge, embrace adventure, and represent our beautiful region on the world stage," said Mayor Millwood.

Hosting The Amazons Australia is expected to deliver significant economic activity across accommodation, hospitality, tourism, retail and the event supply sectors. With around 100 competitors, plus support crews and spectators traveling to the Cassowary Coast, it also strengthens Council’s ongoing commitment to promoting eco-tourism, outdoor recreation, and community engagement.

Councillor Renee McLeod reinforced the positive impact this event will have on inspiring local athletes and economic impact.

"By investing in this world-class event, we are strengthening our local economy, boosting tourism, and providing new media exposure and promotional opportunities for the Cassowary Coast. It’s a major win for our region to be home to the first ever Amazons Australia event, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable tourism and positioning the Cassowary Coast as an adventure tourism leader with a ‘world first’ event."

Beyond the economic impact, The Amazons Australia is designed to empower women, encouraging participants of all skill levels to test their endurance and resilience in a supportive and inclusive environment. Open to women aged 15+ (accompanied by a female 18+), the event welcomes everyone from elite athletes to first-time racers, fostering camaraderie and personal achievement.

Local women are encouraged to be part of this historic event and experience the adventure firsthand.
