YELLOW-LIDDED BINS ARE ARRIVING ACROSS THE CASSOWARY COAST!

Back

The lid swap for green-lidded bins to yellow-lidded recycling bins has officially started today, Monday, 3 March 2025! Cassowary Coast Regional Council, alongside contractor JJ Richards & Son (JJ’s), is ready to assist residents in recycling right.

The swap will take place on your regular dry waste collection day, so there’s no need to worry about additional changes – just get ready to recycle with your new yellow lid!

Mayor Teresa Millwood said the rollout is an exciting milestone for the region as it takes a significant step toward more sustainable waste management.

“This change has started in some sections of Innisfail with JJ’s handling the swap of green-lidded bins to yellow-lidded recycling bins,” Mayor Millwood said.

“Along with your new bin, handy information packs will be available including indoor bin stickers, a fridge magnet, and a flyer. These tools will make it easy for you to start recycling and help ensure we all get it sorted."

Once your yellow-lid bin is delivered, it’s important to continue placing it on the kerb every fortnight, even before kerbside recycling officially begins. Your bin will still be collected on its scheduled fortnightly day.

Starting 24 March 2025, kerbside recycling will go live! From that date forward, your recycling day will align with the same fortnight as when your green-lid bin was previously collected.

“Getting into the routine of putting your yellow-lid bin out every fortnight will make the transition to recycling easier,” Mayor Millwood said. “If you’re unsure about your collection schedule or have any questions, we’re here to help.”

Councillor Ellen Jessop, Waste and Resource Recovery portfolio holder, emphasised the scale of the rollout and the importance of community participation.

“With more than 15,000 households involved, we’re working closely with JJ’s to make the rollout as smooth as possible,” Councillor Jessop said.

“We understand there may be some teething issues as residents adjust to this new service. That’s why we’re urging everyone to carefully read through the kerbside recycling information or visit the recycling page on Council’s website to learn how to recycle correctly.

“And remember, if you’re unsure about anything, don’t hesitate to contact our friendly customer service team for assistance,” she said.

As kerbside recycling begins, Council is encouraging residents to keep it simple and start with these four recyclable items:

  • Hard plastic bottles and containers
  • Steel and aluminium cans
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Paper and cardboard

By focusing on these items, residents can help ensure a smooth start to recycling and reduce the risk of contamination.
