New Bushland Reserve Policy to Preserve Ecosystems Across Cassowary Coast

Back

Cassowary Coast Regional Council has endorsed its new Bushland Reserve Management Policy, aimed at protecting and enhancing local ecosystems. The policy covers 179 council-owned or managed parcels of land, totaling approximately 3,494 hectares across the region.

The primary aim of this initiative is to protect a variety of habitats, including a range of regional threatened plant and animal species. The policy also creates opportunities for sustainable outdoor recreation, environmental offset programs, and greater community involvement.

“Cassowary Coast’s bushland reserves are essential to our region’s future,” said Mayor Teresa Millwood. “This policy ensures we protect these natural spaces, benefiting both the environment and the community by providing access to outdoor activities and fostering local eco-economic opportunities.”

Each reserve will be managed through site plans that focus on habitat protection, water quality improvement, and preserving cultural heritage, if applicable. The initiative also targets the rehabilitation of degraded areas, improve fire management strategies, reduce biosecurity risks, and promotes sustainable recreation for both residents and visitors.

Collaboration is at the heart of this policy, with the Council hoping to partner with local community conservation groups, research organisations, Traditional Owners and natural resource management groups. This approach aims to foster long-term environmental stewardship and enhance community engagement through educational opportunities, interpretive signage, and volunteer-driven restoration projects.

As a key milestone for the region, this policy ensures the preservation of Cassowary Coast’s unique natural beauty and biodiversity for future generations, while also strengthening the community's connection to these vital natural spaces.
