JULY 26, 2022 - MISSION BEACH TOWN CENTRE: FUNDING SECURED

Community can celebrate as funding for the Mission Beach Town Centre Revitalisation project is announced, taking Council one step closer to achieving its total funding goal.

Thanks to the Queensland Government’s 2022-24 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP), Council has secured over $3.5 million toward the revitalisation of the Mission Beach Town Centre.

Major Project’s portfolio holder, Councillor Nick Pervan said the timing of the funding announcement is welcome news, as Council prepares to release the concept designs of the project to the community and also looks to establish a Community and Stakeholder Reference Group (CSRG).

‘The revitalisation of the Mission Beach Town Centre will deliver a thriving and unique experience that will strengthen the region’s visitor economy, support job growth and enhance the liveability of our coastal town.

“The State Governments commitment of funding for this project reduces the burden on Council to deliver this iconic project that will put the Cassowary Coast and region on the tourist map.

“Council is hopeful that, in addition to the State’s contribution, the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund Round Six will match or improve on the commitment to this project.

Cr Pervan said surveyors were onsite this week undertaking laser scan surveying of physical buildings and streetscapes in the Porter Promenade and Village Green area, which will be used to finalise design renders for draft concept plans.

“With the concept design due to be released for community consultation and the expression of interest process for the CSRG due to commence in the coming weeks, the announcement of funding only further increases the excitement surrounding this project,” said Councillor Pervan. 

Member for Hill Shane Knuth said it was great news that extended funding had been approved as the community has been pushing hard to see this come to fruition.

“This funding will help to revitalise and renew the look and feel of the Mission Beach Town Centre,” Mr Knuth said.

“Mission Beach is a growing community and tourist town that has been hit hard by a number of cyclones over the years which is why this revitalisation project will complement the beautiful attractions of the region.

“Not only will tourist benefit but also locals and businesses.”

The CSRG is one part of the planned engagement process as Council works to engage with the community and stakeholders to deliver a finished project. Further information on the process will be released shortly.  Membership for the group will be appointed by Council in accordance with the terms of reference which can be viewed here.

The LGGSP provides funding to support councils to deliver priority infrastructure projects that improve the liveability of communities and support economic growth and employment.
